exercise#2

What is the conflict? What is the basis/ the cause of the problem?

In the article, ‘Emirati Women’, the main conflict revolves around the transition that Emirati women have been going through as they are increasingly being exposed to foreign cultures and influences. As it becomes apparent, the foreign cultures are eroding their cultural and religious traditions and the conflicts ensue in relation to efforts to protect the traditional values.

The basis of the problem in Emirate women is the predominant view that the society have come to look down their traditional culture. In particular, the appreciation of Emirati culture among women has been pushed to periphery with them keen on embracing the foreign culture. While the transition is seemingly beneficial to women and efforts on reforms are being instituted to improve various aspect of Emirati women, this transition has been challenging due to the Emirati women seemingly loss of identity. This has manifested in the perception of the proper role of Emirati women continuing to be a considerable hindrance to advancement.

2.      What is/ are the cultural View(s) behind the conflict?

In regard to cultural views behind this conflict, the rising personal autonomy and economic rights of Emirati women face significant resistance to change. These have contributed to continued discrimination of Emirati women in the process limiting their access to justice.

3.    What is the best solution to the problem?

As an optimum solution to the discrimination that continue to face the Emirati women, it would be desirable for the government to be in the forefront in undertaking reforms at societal as well as governmental levels as a foundation to lasting development and empowerment of Emirati women.

Part: B. From your WorldViews quiz Personal world-view its influences on the way one sees the world

From an individual perspective, Emirati women are notably subject to gender discrimination and such discrimination has over time been entrenched deeply in the societal governance. Even though equality among all Emirate citizens continues being promoted, limited attention is given to gender equality or efforts to eliminate the gender-biased discrimination that exist. Thus, the Emirati women continue being vulnerable.

Part C: Millionaire Boy Racer:

1.       Who are the participants involved in this example of the intercultural conflict.

There are was many people involved in this conflict, for example:

First you have the middle aged man who lives in the area and can watch the show from his balcony (balcony guy)

second one, you have the policeman who is there to enforce the laws and the safety of everyone (policeman)

third person you have the guy who  has vacationed there in London since he was born and his family has a home there (Saudi  guy)

fourth
character,
you have the young adult who is an avid you tuber and “car watcher” who makes money from videoing the cars.

fifth and Lastly,  you have an elderly woman who is a community organizer and keen to do away with the excessive noise and inconvenience of the cars.

2.       What is the conflict?

The conflict is the excessive noise and inconvenience of the multimillion dollar cars that drive through the streets of neighborhoods for three months during the summer, imported by tourists for the summer and then returned to the home country.

3.     What is the perspective of each group of participants and how does their worldview reflect in their perspective.

The balcony guy represents the average aged person who can watch it but understands it is just part of living in culturally diverse London. He was watching the particular car pass by his house twice.

The policeman is not upset by it but just wants to ensure all the proper documents and the owners are being safe. He says it is part of living in London (when he pulled over Rashid and had his car impounded)

The car watcher thinks it is great to be able to see all the best cars right there on the street and uses the opportunity to make money on his you tube account, and the highlight for him would b for anyone of the car drivers to give him a ride anywhere. He feels like people are picking on the drivers and doesn’t understand the fuss.

The Saudi guy just sees it as normal and part of a lifestyle he grew up in. He is amused by the attention he receives while driving.

4.     Think of a better way to respond to the conflict for each of the participants.

The “policeman” responds as he should he impounded the vehicle for improper paper work and that was the end of that.

The “balcony man” doesn’t seem that bothered by it and his response is fine.

The “car watcher” films and documents the cars which could be feeding the frenzy of the drivers so he could find another occupation because maybe if there was not an audience the drivers would not be such an issue

The “Saudi guy” is amused with the attention so he continues to do the sort of things to get the attention, so he could either go to the proper place to show off his car and skills or he could find another way to attract attention.

The “Community Organizer” is trying to get attention to the situation and make complaints yet her and none of her group have ever spoken or tried to speak to any of the people she is complaining about. Instead of running around complaining she could try to speak to one of the drivers of the cars.

5-    How \ why are the worldview between young male Saudis and Kuwaits different than young Emiraties?

Saudis: likes to enjoy but should be clear to them ( like in video show )

Kuwaits: getting everything before where live and get enough.

Emiraties: likes all but respect, feels and think where his heading.
